Charles Oliveira — EA SPORTS UFC 6

I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to contribute to a wide range of characters throughout the EA SPORTS UFC 6 project while working alongside a highly experienced and professional team. Being part of this production was a valuable experience that allowed me to expand my knowledge, strengthen my character art skills, and learn from the artists, leads, and specialists around me.

For Charles Oliveira, I worked across several stages of the character art pipeline, with a strong focus on likeness, realism, anatomy, surface quality, and fine character-specific details.

The character development process involved a combination of traditional sculpting and working with scan-based data when available. Depending on the source material, I cleaned and refined the scan data, corrected proportions and anatomical forms, improved facial structure, and added secondary and tertiary details necessary to achieve the final production quality.

My Responsibilities

My work on the character included:

  • Traditional sculpting and form refinement in ZBrush
  • Cleaning up and refining scan-based geometry when provided
  • Correcting facial and body proportions and anatomy
  • Adding secondary and tertiary sculpted details
  • Modeling, cleanup, and final polish in Maya
  • Texture creation and refinement using Substance 3D Painter and Adobe Photoshop
  • Hair and grooming work in Maya using Ornatrix
  • Reconstructing and refining body tattoos based on available reference material
  • Maintaining character quality while meeting the technical requirements of the UFC 6 production pipeline

Likeness & Character Refinement

One of the most important aspects of the work was achieving an accurate and recognizable likeness of Charles Oliveira.

Using the available reference material, I carefully studied his facial structure, proportions, anatomy, and distinctive features. When scan data was available, it served as a starting point, but still required significant cleanup and artistic refinement.

This included correcting scan artifacts, improving anatomical forms, refining proportions, restoring subtle facial characteristics, and adding details that were not fully captured in the original scan data.

Tattoo Reconstruction

Charles Oliveira’s tattoos were also an important part of maintaining the authenticity and identity of the character.

Because tattoo references can vary significantly in quality, resolution, lighting, perspective, and visibility, I reconstructed and refined the tattoo artwork using multiple reference images.

The process involved correcting perspective distortion, rebuilding unclear or missing areas, refining shapes and patterns, matching placement and scale across the body, and integrating the final tattoo textures naturally with the skin materials.

Attention to Detail

A major focus throughout the process was maintaining a high level of detail across every aspect of the character, including:

  • Facial structure and likeness-specific features
  • Body anatomy and proportions
  • Scan cleanup and surface refinement
  • Skin pores, wrinkles, and subtle surface variation
  • Tattoo accuracy, placement, and integration
  • Hair and grooming details
  • Texture and material definition
  • Clothing and fabric characteristics
  • Small character-specific details that contribute to the overall realism

Throughout the project, I focused on balancing likeness, realism, artistic refinement, technical limitations, and production requirements to create a character that matched the visual quality expected for EA SPORTS UFC 6.
